Society is a group of people with common territory, interaction, and culture. While human societies vary in different parts of the world, most of them emphasize the idea that individuals should make certain sacrifices for the common good. Members of societies are expected to follow certain norms, which are guidelines or expectations for behavior. In both The Stranger and A Doll House, we see characters who defy cultural norms.
What do you think are the characteristics of a good member of society? What are some of the norms or expected behaviors in our society? Why do some people rebel against society? Do you have greater respect for those who conform to or those who rebel against society? Why is society so against those who are different?

Some characteristic of a good member of society is being nice, well-behaved, and helpful. Many people, however, have different looks on what being a good member or a society should be. So what is the norm of behaviors that is expected? Have you ever seen that episode of Spongebob when he turns normal? Spongebob goes on this transformation to being normal because Squidward made him feel bad. Spongebob turns normal by watching a video, then after the video he turns round and has no holes. He then becomes even more normal by telling Squidward “Lovely weather we’re having”. Then he works on a computer to be even more normal and efficient, but the patties aren’t as good as they were. Why do some people rebel against the norm? I don’t know, to be a rebel, be different maybe? Let’s be honest, no one is ever normal, everyone of us is different. Do I respect people who rebel or try to be different? I honestly don’t care. You do what you wanna do, if it makes you happy, have at it. Why are we so against rebellion. Most people are against rebellious people mostly because they don’t fit in their definition or “normal”.

ReplyDeleteSome characteristics of a good member of society is like helping your community out, doing your duties as a citizen, etc. A good member of society is one who respects those around them, is responsible, and is a great role model to the new generation.I guess we expect people to act “properly” not wild, that is like a social role that people around us adapt to, or at least some of us do. We expect them to do great things for our community and even our world. I believe that people rebel against society because they want to do whatever pleases them, they want to be themselves no matter what the consequences are. It could also be that something is wrong with them. I have to say that anyone who ends up rebelling against society ends up dead or in jail. I look up to those who have respect to society because it makes me feel that i want to be a person like that in the future not only that but you have a lot of people who look up to you and respect you, i would love to be a person like that. It’s also good to be a good member of society because you’re actually doing something with your life and less chances of you ending up in trouble or worse, dead. Society is against those that are different because we think that they’re not capable of doing the things that we do or because they’re not “good enough” but i think that it’s kind of stupid to think that because at least every person in this world has a skill that could help someone in need, so i say that it’s dumb to reject those who are different because that person can come in handy sometime.

Some norms in our society is to go to school, grow up, have a job, and have a family. Some people rebel against society because they don’t want to be ‘the norm’ they want to be the new thing and no be like everyone else. If you just do the same things all the time like everyone else then life gets boring. I have more respect for people who go against society because they aren't scared to break out of ‘the norm’ and they just do what they want without giving a care to what others think. Society is so against people who are different because they probably are scared that they are smarter than them and they are jealous because they wish they had the guts to go against it.
ReplyDeleteI think our version of a good member of society is overrated. We don’t give any one who isn’t dressed normal or looks decent to us any time of the day. People today are already judging you before a word comes out of your mouth. The behaviors expected are to be respectful, responsible, and be an honest person. Even though everyone isn’t like this, we still have good members. I think a good member is someone who is respectful, does their duties to society, but still themselves. Those who rebel against society do that to be different. The rebels aren’t trying to be like everyone else and live the normal lifestyle. I personally have respect for everyone whom crosses my way until they have done something to lose it. I think that the people of our society today are against those who are different because we are afraid of change.
ReplyDeleteI think the whole idea of a good member in society to us, is completely over estimated. We, as a society would rather judge a person than listen to the first thing they have to say. You would think their behaviors would be nice, respectful, understanding, and honest. Even though many people are like that, there are a lot who is not. I think a person should have those qualities, including responsibility, hard working, and being trustworthy. Also I think those who rebel against society are just doing it to be different. They don't want to have the “normal” lifestyle, so they do anything they can to make them stand out. I personally don't think anything is wrong with that, because who would want to do the same thing as everyone else? Though many people don't have the same opinion as me. To them, standing out is just wanting attention. But I think the real problem with society is the fact none of us can handle change. We will continue to go down hill, till people start to realize that everyone is different, and that's okay.
ReplyDeleteA good member of a society is anyone involved in said society that positively contributes to society. By the standards of society, a good citizen holds good personality qualities, is part of the working class or at the least has some occupation, has a similar fashion to the majority of the population, and generally a good citizen does not stand out in a bad light. Some, who believe we are held back by the restrictions of society, and do not agree with its norms, will rebel or act out to differentiate themselves. Could be simple things such dressing in a non-normal fashion, or publically expressing opinions that go against the majority. I believe everyone is entitled to their own view on how one should act in society, and I respect them all for doing exactly what they want and what they believe is best for themselves. I do however give more respect to the “rebels” of society for willing to be different. A lot of the times, being different from the normal causes people to not like you. They may think you weird and not a good fit for society. This whole peer pressure effect is real, and it's completely ridiculous. I believe an individual should be allowed to act in whatever manner they want, as long as it is not at the expense of others or themselves to an extent.
ReplyDeleteI think good members of our society can hold many different characteristics, which vary depending on who you ask. I personally think a good member of society is dedicated to their community, kind to all, hardworking, honest, and takes part in their civic duties. I think some “norms” of our society is judging people for what they wear, how they look, and how they act. Everybody in a way segregates from one another depending on your appearance. I think some people rebel against our society because they know it’s not right and want to start the change. They are brave enough to stand up to the “norms”. I have equal if not greater respect for those who rebel against society, only if they do it in a non-violent way. My opinion remains the same for those who conform to is as well. I think our society is against those who are different because they want everything to go their way, with all differences set aside.
ReplyDeleteTo be a good member of society, you are expected to be helpful and obey the law. Many people believe to be a good member of society, you’re suppose to act “normal”. The definition of normal is to be average. I dont know about you, but the last thing I would want to be is average. Sometimes when people don’t act normal, they are perceived as a social outcast. Those who rebel against society because they don't want to be “normal”, are not bad people. They are very brave people who don't want to be “normal”. They want to show people that, yes, they are different. I have so much respect for those who go against society. They are brave and don't care what people think about them. It takes a lot of courage to go against society. I don't really understand why society is against people who are different. There is nothing wrong with being different. Everyone is unique and that is okay.

Also they should help people out if they need help. A good person shouldn't be racist because that doesn't help the world at all! Some norms are people who don't break rules, don't commit crimes. Some people rebel against society because they don't want to follow nobody else rules but there's. Also they could be physically crazy. I have a greater respect for those who conform society! because if they respect society then you don't really have to worry about them doing anything stupid to hurt society! Most people don’t expect most of us to do as we are told and not being as helpful as we should. Why do some people rebel against society? Most people rebel against society because they feel as if they know what’s best for themselves. People like to do things and think that they will not have any consequences after they actually do it. Honestly my respect for those who conform to or those who rebel against society is equal. There are certain reasons why some people rebel against society, the same with people who conform to it. Everyone has their reasons. Society usually go against people who are different because they feel as if everyone should act or be stereotyped into a certain category, and having someone that does not fit into any of the categories are sought as indifferent or not “normal.”

These characteristics are all expected to be fulfilled by society in this day and age. Many people have different expectations of what is normal in everyday life and society. Many people see that getting up and going to school is one normal part of society. I also see this as an important part of society. Society also sees having a job and going to work everyday as an important part of society. People rebel against society when they feel something happens that is not right. I have respect for the people who rebel against society in a mature way. Peaceful ways of rebelling work much more efficiently than violent ones. I also respect the people who decide to conform to society. It is their decision not mine. A lot of people have different thoughts and views on certain things, so what is right to our “society” may not be right to other people. Expected behaviors in our society would have to be, being a good citizen, being a positive person towards others, being productive with your community like helping out with community watch and etc. People rebel against society because of their beliefs on things. Like I said before, people have different views on certain things. So some people that are categorized as being a rebel towards the society are not really being the rebel, their just following what they believe. I have an equal type of respect for both sides because being a “good” member of society isn’t picture perfect. Some things you won’t agree with and some things you will agree with. Society is against people who are different because if you don’t see the same thing they see or if you don’t have the same views as them, you are different and they don’t understand what you view because they feel like what they view is right and what you view is wrong.

Some expected behaviors in our society are like when people want to wear the same things as others to “look cool” or “fit in”. Another expected behaviors in our society is that women and young girls all want to have that perfect beach body, if you look in magazines all you see is the so called perfect women. Skinny, long legs, perfect complexion, its not all about those perfect features. You must learn to appreciate yourself the way you are. I have some respect for those who rebel against society, those you are willing to step out and be different from everyone else. If we had more people like that in society and didnt care so much about what people think about us, we would have a more diverse society.

Having good behavior, and personalities toward other people. Some people rebel against society because of what they believe in. It could be going against what someone is wearing, their appearance. What we’re expected to is to do whatever the government says to do whenever they tell you to do, we’re expected to be under the government control. Some people rebel because they don't like what the government wants you to do and they don't like how the try to control your whole life. I have more respect for the people who rebel against society because i don't like people who do things they don't want to be or people who are under control all the time worrying about what if they do this will they get in trouble. The world need us to care and not have our heads so far up our own butts that we only see what’s good for us. Older people expect more of us younger generations. This isn't really a bad thing it just seems as though they don't understand times have changed. People are expected to do some things that would basically make you perfect. Nobody can be a perfect citizen. I think some people rebel against society because they don't like being told what they can and can't do. In my opinion they shouldn't be. If somebody wants to do something it isn't society’s job to hold them back. I'm not for or against either side, but i would applaud those who rebel and do what makes them happy. Society will walk off and leave you but if you make yourself happy, then it doesn't even matter. I believe society is so against those who don't conform because in the earlier generations there was hardly any of this. The newer generations would much rather stand up for what they want. Younger people have developed enough to be able to stand up for what they want. The way i see it society is against those who don't conform because we live in a very controlling environment. Everybody thinks the way they think is the right way. Society always want you to sink down to their ways that way nobody shines above others.

DeleteCharacteristics of a good member in society to me include to be caring, helpful, selfless, generosity, etc. Although those are characteristics that people probably wants everyone to have, a lot of us don’t even have those characteristics ourselves. Some of the norms expected in our society are for people to be mean, greedy, selfish, conceited, etc. In our society most people are all about themselves and don’t really care for what’s going on with other people’s lives. Some people rebel against society, in my opinion, because they think that somebody else is not going to help them get what they want/need, so they go out and possibly do bad things to get whatever they’re looking for. I have a greater respect for those who do good in society. The people who go out of their way to help others are the people that I look up to and respect. Society is so against those that are different because they all want to be like the good-hearted people.
ReplyDeleteSociety is breeded upon very contradictory opinions such as; you're too skinny then you have an eating disorder but if you’re not small then you're overweight and unhealthy (very overused i know…) … I can't seem to come to any sense with their ideas but i do believe that everyone is different. Nobody is the exact same size as you or has the same vision. We personally all see through different viewpoints and some of us are so ecocentric that they actually believe everyone is on terms with their insane point of view. You can’t help it if you don’t like things being considered as “weird” but you can keep your mouth shut and allow others the same rights that you have. Everyone possesses at least one quality that could be considered a characteristic of a good member of society but not everyone uses it. Kindness, selflessness, the ability to keep quiet and not judge. We all judge but it’s those who put people out there that make our society seem messed up. Nobody is wrong to feel what they feel but it is wrong to put another down if one disagrees and don’t grab the concept that there is an opinion other than their own that matters.

For me, good characteristics of a member in society are ones who help each other to improve. Most importantly is peace throughout the society, in that way it makes it easier to improve from there. People in our society expect too much in other words overrated. Some do not appreciate what a person has to offer and the most they can give. Instead they judge even if they don’t know the person. Society expects everyone to be perfect but because of that it will be hard for everyone to agree due to their different views of what perfect is to them. Some people rebel against society just because they want to be different and what they believe in. I have greater respect for those who rebel against society because they’re strong enough and not fear of from being judged. ReplyDeleteI think a good member of society should have honesty, authenticity, they should be understanding, and nice. Some of the norms and expected behaviors that people in our society believe that everybody should have is that everybody should be the same, that is not a good quality in a person in my opinion. I believe there has to be people that are different because they are leaders and are not blinded by what everything tells them to do. A person should be honest because they should be able to stand up to society and tell them when they don’t like or agree with something. They should be understanding because they should understand not everybody can afford to be the same, not everybody wants to be the as everybody else and you of course have to be nice to understand that. Some people rebel against society because they want to be different, they don’t look to “fit in” like most of the people in the world they look to be themselves and not go by what anybody says. The person needs to be respectful of the other people if they want to get respect back and they have to help other people by donating or giving things to people who are poor. Expected behaviors in our society is that we have to have manners and have to respect other people. Some people rebel against society is because they feel like there not getting treated right and that nobody is coming to help them out so they rebel to get some attention to the problem. I have greater respect for people who rebel against society because they are fighting for their rights and most people don't care about them because they are not going threw what they go threw. That should be the ideal citizen in our society however, it is not. Everyone has their own opinion on how society should be. You have some people that have not been taught these values and do not know any better so they do what ever. In today’s society you can expect to see violence and cruelty everywhere. People killing each other, cops killing civilians, fights in school and the list goes on and on. I think the reason people go against what’s right is because some don’t care or they are standing up for something they believe in. I have respect for people who conform with society; because when you have people that do what they are supposed to everything runs smoother. But, I also have respect for those who rebel for a good cause such as the civil rights movement. But, when people do rebel against something it can cause a lot of confusion and trouble, and some people don’t understand everybody can’t get what they want. I think most people want things to run smooth and be simpler and that is why people are against those who are different or don’t try and fit in with society. To be honest people are always going to do what they want to do and always be different and original that’s what makes our society so complex and diverse. No one is the exact same they might have some similarities but you are still you and there will never be another so do you and dare to be different.

We the people should expect good citizenship of others, because we weren’t made to bully each other, or discriminate, we all have a purpose. Treat others how you want to be treated at all times. Some individuals go against society for anger reasons. Men with anger management usually go out and commit a crime or physically abuse someone to ease their anger. I have low respect for rebellions. Why? Rebellions bring pessimistic to the table, keeps things positive and straightforward. It all depends, Mortals who rebel for civil rights or citizen rights have the right to be tolerated with respect, because their rebelling against a natural chaos in our society. None is perfect nor is someone the same, we’re all different and still should have respect for our society.
ReplyDeleteA good member of a society is a completely opinionated idea and changes depending on where you are in the world, and even in the country. Here in Gastonia North Carolina we stop for funerals while when I had lived in Saint Louis Missouri.nobody had stopped for a funeral and people acted like nothing had happened. To me the societal “Norms” are that someone is kind to someone else’s face while being two-faced by actually being mean and hateful. Some people rebel against society because they believe that this way of life is wrong. I personally feel more respect for people who rebel against society because the “hippie” movement was an example of this and was also very influential. People are normally against these movements because people are scared of change and are frightened by anything different. My views on societal “Norms” might not be exactly what yours or anyone else’s but they are what I find to be true about society.

ReplyDeleteA good member of society is probably someone who contributes to their country such as voting, donating, and helping out others. Some of the norms expected in society are to have some type of education, wealth of some type, and be an independent person. Once one reaches around 40 years of age one's expected to be in a relationship or marriage. Most people perceive others to be "pretty" or "cute" and get along with everyone else or else one's "weird" or "lame". I have respect for everyone, so I am not bias towards those who rebel or conform with society. Society is against those who are "different" because society has set norms that are supposed to be "right" and make everyone "happy", but in reality we are all different. Everyone in this world Is unique the only difference is that there are those who want to fit in with society and then there's those who'd rather be themselves and not care about what society thinks. When someone tends to Stand out one either criticizes or stands out too, but most people would rather fit in. When there is change or difference that what society is accustomed to it brings concern and rebellion. Changes and differences can be hard to adapt and accept.
Being a “good” member of society all depends on how someone chooses to look at it. No one person is known to be perfect so its hard to say who is good and who is not. A good member of society in my eyes is someone who is nice, hardworking, mature, and responsible, after all why would we want any less than that in society? Sadly we have many people who are the exact opposite, people will often riot these days for something stupid such as a Super Bowl victory. Why must people go out and feel the need to flip cars and burn building just because a team won? Society has become one corrupt idiotic place that is honestly hard to live with. If everyone would just grow up just a tad and realize that they are very much idiots and need to change their actions then maybe society would be better off. But as long as fools are among us we will never truly have a peace filled society that “ everyone “ wants.
ReplyDeleteI think the characteristics of a good member of society is honesty, responsibility, nice, and respectful. I think today in society these things are expected but not enforced. I feel as if everyone expects something out of everybody but we don't enforce and drive them to do what is necessary. Everyone in society are basically the same way and if you're not like them then others are against you. This generation's society is very diverse it's different beliefs and it's causing uproar. Everyone wants to be normal but really what is normal? Everyone is their own person and if you don't fit into someone's category does that make you not normal? Society has many different outlooks and people have different outlooks on society. Sometimes I honestly think the ranks in society are too high. Everyone wants to be known and no one wants to be outspoken when in all reality society doesn't hear our voices. I just think society has the necessities to be better we just need the right people to enforce it.

Some of the norms or expected behaviors in a society are trustworthy members, hard workers, and following the rules that are demanded. Some people rebel against society because they don’t like being told how to live there life with others. I can see why people wouldn’t like that because sometimes I get mad too. I have more respect for those who conform by reason of they have the respect for others words and follow that person on what they say. I also think they have more cooperative behavior in situations and responsibility for what they do in society. I’m probably more of someone who conforms with society. Some reasons I assume society is against those who are different is because they don’t like that people aren’t following their expectations and rules. They also probably are against them because they don’t get their way with everyone.
ReplyDeleteThere a lot of examples of good members of society, but everyone's opinion is different. I think a good members of society look after each other. They keep in touch with important information. They are loyal to each other and can help each other out in times of need. They also have respect for one another even if they do not care for each other to much. Again some expected behaviors of a society depends on where you are . I think most are raising a family the right way and being kind. In part of Africa to marry someone you present there father with cows and beer, it is what is considered normal. In Egypt most people do not have tattoos it is considered taboo. I believe one reason people rebel from society is because the don't believe that their usual way of society is the right way to live. I have respect for both groups, maybe some rebel from society because unfair laws are put in place. Others who do confirm to society respect their culture. Most people against rebelions of society are threatened by them or scared of change. Most societe's like to stick with there ancestors way of life, but sometime rebelion is good everyone has different views on life and want change.

Things that are expected in our society is to follow and listen to what the government and pay taxes. A lot of people rebel against society because they do not agree with what other people say how they should live like.That’s why they rebel against society so that they can change it to what they believe society should be like. It is really hard for me to say who I respect more when it comes to a good member of society or the rebel in the streets because each one is very hard to do for anyone. But I think I would have more respect for the rebel because it takes even more stand up for what you believe in, in such a society as this one.

Some expected behaviors in our society are not all good people are expected to judge people, people judge people without realizing they are. Some people rebel against our society because they do not agree with it, they may have others views or maybe they just are being themselves and that happens to make them seem like they are rebelling. I have greater respect for those who rebel against society because if you think about it, if you are rebelling against society you are not being a unique individual. That means you are not being a leader because a leader does not follow what everyone else does. Society is against people that are different because they judge them for not being like the in crowd. They think just because they are not acting like them or looking like them they have to be against them which is not the case everybody should be able to act for themselves without having a label as a good member of society.

Some of the expected behaviors are hugging, aggression, sleeping, and arguing with yourself. People rebel against society simply because they want to do what’s not morally right. Some people just can’t live in society with the expectations set by our ancestors. They feel that the guidelines set restrict their freedom. these people are known as anti-socials. But it isn’t just the anti-socials every human at one point in their lives wonders how life would be without government or society’s expectations. Its reasonable since our ancestors were cavemen and neanderthals at one point. i once heard that humans in their natural state are fickle, cruel, and savages. So if this is true we will return to our natural state or be prone to rebel against society. For those who follow the laws and those who don’t i have the same amount respect for them. people in my life have my respect just for being a fellow human being. even though someone who is uncivilized might lose my respect quicker than any civilized human my respect is equivalent. society however isn't as accepting to people who are different and share different beliefs. for example the holocaust, slavery, and gay people society is so interested in others beliefs and behavior we forget that we’re all humans. so to answer your question i think baby Jesus is better than 30 yr old Jesus but that’s my opinion don't judge me. ReplyDeleteI think a good member of society would be aware of everything going on in their community and adjust to the certain circumstances. They would participate in events and help other people in their society. Some of the normal things that people do are;when you meet someone, you shake hands with them, pulling over for emergency vehicles, and not invading someone’s personal space. Some people in society do not like certain things and are always trying to find something wrong with the government. Sometimes the government will pass a law that other people do not agree with and the people will protest against it. Rebels go against the flow and make themselves known, while those who conform adapt and change to work with the flow of society; and because of this I respect both parties equally. I feel that society goes against those who are different is because just that. Some people do not appreciate nor like the fact that certain people go against what they think people should do. Change does not come to certain people easily; they must work to overcome their feeling to accept others that are different. Many do not try and overcome these feelings however, instead they act upon them in a vulgar way.
ReplyDeleteI think good characteristics of society is honestly, responsibility, courage, and respectfulness. The problem is many people automatically expect people to be like this, but everyone isn't. Many people don't think the way everyone else does, and would rather be different, and stand out, which could be looked at as rebelling against society. I do in fact have respect for them though, because they have enough courage to do their own thing, and be their self, which is great. But society will always be against them though, and the reason why is because we are all expected to have a normal life, do the same things, dress normal, and act the same. I don't agree with this at all but that's how society wants humanity. I do hope that things will change one day though, because no one is ever going to be the same.
ReplyDeleteI think your reference to the "us-them" mentality makes a lot of sense. People don't know how to respond to people who are different.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the past plays a big role in shaping who we are and where we fit in society. There's no way to change the past, so we have to figure out how to make the present and the future the best it can be for everyone.
