Dean Smith, was found dead in his home on February 7th, 2015. It was said that he died peacefully, but the people around him were deeply devastated like the family that found him.
ReplyDeleteDean Smith struggled with Alzheimer's syndrome for the longest time so it was finally his time to go.
Dean Smith was a legend all on his own. He has influenced many people on and off the court of Carolina Tar Heel Basketball. He taught the value of team play and being a family. He turned the basketball program at Chapel Hill into a fierce, inspiring one. Dean Smith spent 36 years as a coach and supporter at the Tar Heel basketball games. He is really a true legend and example to many. Off the bench, Smith took stands for many social issues, notably civil rights. He is an inspiring person to many and many have felt this loss. He will never be forgotten to Tar Heel fans everywhere.
He is known to make NBA or ABA players. Many of his past players have been drafted into these programs, such as Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Jerry Stackhouse, Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, etc. Also the coaching staff has been some of his players, current Roy Williams and Larry Brown are examples of this.
“Smith’s legacy continues in the hearts of many and even the ones that didn’t get to see him coach. The most important thing he shared was his knowledge and that is the greatest gift he could have given” Roy Williams said. Dean will forever be in our hearts and a legacy and role model to many!!
This event shows that people can make impacts on your life whether you knew them from the name or personally, you never realize what they have done until they are gone.
Global and important events need to be known so that we know what is going on in the world and so we are not clueless so that we can have knowledge and get as much information as possible on things.

My event is when Damian Lillard got selected in the All-Star game in NYC and this event happened on February 8th. Adam Silver, Damian Lillard and Blake Griffin are involved. Damian Lillard is a basketball player who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers and he is playing really good basketball right now so Adam Silver called him up to join the Western All-Star team. This happened because Blake Griffin got injured and the team needed one more player so they called Damian up. It affected a lot of people because a lot of his fans wanted to see him play and people thought he deserved it because he is playing better than a lot of NBA players right now. We can learn from this is that hard work pays off. It is important to know what's happening around because you get to know what kind of success people are having and how they get there.

http://money.cnn.com/2015/02/08/media/brian-williams-letterman/index.html
ReplyDeleteMy event was Brian Williams canceling his appearance on with David Letterman. This was announced on February 8th and is most likely in response to William’s latest controversy. William’s lied about his role in the Iraq war, he said he was in a helicopter that was under fire, but that was a lie, and now he is facing the consequences. It was revealed to be a lie after a soldier said he was not present in said helicopter. Williams said he would take a hiatus from television for several days, most likely in response to this whole debacle. One would assume Williams lied about this to gain respect and popularity among the American People. I think it's despicable that he did this, it completely undermines those who actually were involved in the situation of the helicopter. Its safe to say that Williams will have this controversy follow him for the rest of his life, even he shows that he is genuinely sorry for his actions, you can’t get away with stuff like this in this day in age where information is all stored on the internet.
Nice word choice in your response!

ReplyDeleteThe current event I am taking notice, will be France and Morocco fighting terrorism. The people involved in this are French President, Francois Hollande, and Morocco King, Mohammed VI. They simply “vowed to fight terrorism together and to fully cooperate on security issues, putting an end to a year of diplomatic discord.” These two well known leaders met on Monday in Paris, to talk about the terrorism events. They loved the idea of "a new dynamic of trustful and ambitious cooperation" between the two nations. France and Morocco officially established a new judicial system. All of this happened, due to the mass amount of terrorism that has been affecting the people of their countries. This article shows that terrorism has affected everyone on this earth, in some way. The two leaders have shown initiative to stop these acts of terrorism. These acts by great leaders can influence those to do the right thing, and to inform those who have lost their loved ones by terrorism as well. I believe it is very important to pay attention to these current events, so you are correctly informed about what is going on in the world you live in.
Legendary University of North Carolina head basketball coach Dean Smith, died saturday (Feb. 7th) evening at the age of 83. He passed away peacefully in his home with his wife and children by his side. He battled dementia for several of years. Dean Smith coached the Tar Heels from 1982-1983. He coached Michael Jordan, Billy Cunningham, James Worthy and Vince Carter. When Michael heard the devastating news, he issued a statement saying “Other than my parents, no one had a bigger influence on my life than Coach Smith. He was more than a coach, he was a mentor, my teacher, my second father. Coach was always there for me whenever I needed him and I loved him for it. In teaching me the game of basketball, he taught me about life.” Smith was inspiring, loved, and a good coach; coaching 36 seasons and tallying 879-254, UNC named their basketball area after Dean Smith in 1986, and its known as “The Dean Dome.” The day after the death of Dean Smith, students left flowers outside the arena in his memory. On and off the court Dean Smith was a well known, nice, and inspiring person.

ReplyDeleteTeen killed classmate and uploaded selfie with the body to snapchat
This happened February 6th in Jeannette, Pa. In this event Maxwell Marion Morton was the one who committed the crime and Ryan Mangan was the victim. Maxwell’s friend and friend’s mother was involved too as well as the police. A teenager from Pennsylvania was accused for murdering his classmate and taking a selfie with his body and sending it to a friend on snapchat. The teen who committed the crime is named Maxwell and he apparently shot his classmate Ryan in the face and took a selfie and sent it to his friend. When his friend received the message he was able to save it before it disappeared because snapchat deletes its messages after a certain amount of time. When he saved it he showed his mother and his mother turned the picture over to the police. Ryans mom found her son on wednesday in her home shot once in the face. Police searched Maxwells home and after the found a 9mm handgun hidden under the basement steps he confessed to killing Ryan Mangan. Police also found that Maxwell sent his friend other messages like “I told you i would clean up the shells” and “ Ryan was not the last. The reason Maxwell killed Ryan is not known. This affected people by giving police new ways to get more information on future crimes. It hurt a lot of people and left a lot of people confused with questions like Why did he do it?, or What was his motive? or How can someone be so cruel and be able to take a picture with a dead body? It affected Ryans family because it was not expected that their son would die like that. We can learn from this incident because everyday technology can lead to cases and people that you think are harmless could be a threat. It Shows that our human race treat each other bad and will kill each other and act like nothing happened. Its important to know what global events are going on so you know what is going on in the world. What to look out for and what to expect or things that could affect them.
Great summary of a tragic event. It's hard to believe that a person could just shoot someone else like that, but what's even harder for me to believe is that the kid took a picture of his crime. Talk about incriminating oneself! Unbelievable!

ReplyDeleteBy refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama, city bus in 1955, black seamstress Rosa Parks helped initiate the civil rights movement in the United States. Her action was spontaneous and not premeditated, although her previous civil rights involvement and strong sense of justice were obvious influences. She quoted; "When I made that decision," “I knew that I had the strength of my ancestors with me.” The leaders of the local black community organized a bus boycott that began the day Parks was convicted of violating the segregation laws. Led by a young Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the boycott lasted more than a year, during which Parks not coincidentally lost her job, and ended only when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional. Over the next half-century, Parks became a nationally recognized symbol of dignity and strength in the struggle to end entrenched racial segregation. We learned how one brave person or somebody stepping up is all we need to have other join our opinions when it come to serious events.
The event I selected happened on August 9th, 2014 in Ferguson, Mo. A police officer, the name of the officer has not been released, and an 18-year-old teenage boy named Michael Brown. It is said that Brown was shot during a dispute with the officer. It was told otherwise when a friend of Brown said that the officer shot Brown when he didn’t listen to the officer when he was being told to move out of the middle of the street onto the sidewalk. It was also said that Brown’s hands were above his head at the time of the shooting. This event affected people because Brown was friend, a son, etc. to somebody and they just lost that person. This event also contributed to the bad reputation that police officers have been getting recently. We can learn to just abide by the rules, and don’t be hard-headed about situations. This entire situation could’ve possibly been avoided if he would’ve just listened to the officer. It is important to be aware of national events because anything could be happening that will have an effect on you and your life.

The Grammy’s occurred on February 8th, 2015 in Staples Center, located in Los Angeles California. It is the biggest award show of the year, all the most famous stars like, Pharrel Williams, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Lorde, and Eric Church come out for a night to be nominated and to win awards for things such as, music and acting. This year the grammys were a tribute to the "Black Lives Matter" movement, which is a call to action and response to anti-Black racism created after unjust deaths of young black men. This award show happens because we want to award the stars for the good things they do. This affects the lives of people because they want to know what is going on in the hollywood world, and this helps to show that. This is important to be aware of because you should always know who is on top of the charts, and who isn’t anymore.

ReplyDeleteJesse Matthew charged in Hannah Graham slaying
18 year old Hannah Graham went missing after last being seen in Charlottesville's Downtown Mall area. In October police found what turned out to be her skull and bones. The evidence was found 8 miles from where she attended school. Surveillance video and other evidence led authorities to identify Matthew as the suspect in her disappearance. Matthew had been taken in on charged of abduction along with other before his charges were upgraded to murder. Due to his involvement in this case police took a look into his involvement in some unsolved killings and disappearances in the area. One of those cases being the case of 17-year-old Alexis Murphy of Lovingston, Virginia, who disappeared in 2013 and whose body has not been found. The list of other crimes he is being looked at for include
1.Morgan Harrington, a Virginia Tech student who vanished in Charlottesville in October 2009
2.the August 2009 killing of Virginia Tech students Heidi Childs and David Metzler
3.the October 2009 killing of 23-year-old Cassandra Morton of Lynchburg, Virginia
4.the disappearance of 19-year-old Samantha Ann Clarke of Orange, Virginia.
This affected these people because a total of 7 people are either missing or dead. But not only are they gone but these families have lost a loved one who they will never or may never get back. We can learn from this the world is scary place. We all need to take caution and be prepared at any moment for the worst. But also never take your loved ones for granted, you never know when the last time you see them will be. It is important to know about global events because we need to not be clueless about the world around us. The world is a messed up place and we all need to do our best to make it better.

3 students were found dead on Tuesday evening after being shot in the head in their apartment near the UNC Chapel Hill campus. 46 year old Craig Stephan Hicks was charged with the murder of the 3 students. Police think that a dispute over parking may have been the motive behind the murders. Hicks turned himself in to the police later that night. The students that were shot were of the Muslim faith and many people think that is another reason for the murder. On Tuesday night friends and family members of the victims gathered to wait and hear information from the police. This shows that some people have smaller tempers and act in violence more that someone who has better anger management. It is important to be aware of national events because it could affect you more than someone else because you are closer to where the event happened.

ReplyDeleteOn Monday, February 3rd, a Taliban commander by the name of Mullah Abdul Rauf , and 4 others were killed in a drone strike. He had been captured by the United States, but was let go and returned to Afghanistan. He went on to become a recruiter for the ISIS in Afghanistan before his death, and was known as Khadim. The other 4 people were Pakistani militants. He had been arrested and sent to Guantanamo soon after the Taliban's collapse, and was released in 2007. He had convinced his jailers that he only wanted to go home and work on his farm. He then escaped from his house arrest in Kabul, and fled to Pakistan. The U.S could not have his arrested, so they filed for pakistan to arrest him. It affected us because it put many people in danger. Having a terrorist come here, is very serious. Khadim was connected to many people and if we would have caught it, it would have been bad. I learned that, Dangers are everywhere. You might not know it, but they are. A person needs to always be safe, and watch who they trust. I had no idea about this, until i just read it. I think its very important to know what is going on in our country. I want to know if we are in danger or if we are expecting something. Its better if we do.
An American Airlines plane heading to Cedar Rapids from Dallas was forced to make an emergency landing after a unusual smell was detected in the cockpit. Once the plane had landed everyone on flight 3235 was asked to exit the plane and to leave their luggage. The passengers had no idea what was really happening. They were told it was a leaking fumes. The passengers were concerned the plane would blow up, which ended up never happening. Although everything appeared to be okay, even though the smell was still present, all the passengers were told they would have to stay the night in a motel, the cost covered by American Airlines. This event could show that people do care about one another with making sure everyone is safe while flying. I think it is important to be informed about national or global events because even though it’s happening far away it can still affect you. http://abcnews.go.com/US/unusual-odor-forces-airliner-make-emergency-landing/story?id=28847633
ReplyDeleteIf you’ve watched the news lately, you’ve heard about the topic of vaccinations being talked about. Some parents lately haven’t been giving their children the measles shot and now these children are getting the measles and ends up spreading to other unvaccinated children. As of last year, the United States has had the most cases of measles since 1994 with a huge number of 644. Some people believe that vaccinations can cause autism. This year, most of the outbreaks are linked to Disneyland, said by the CDC. This is a very fought about topic with some people agreeing with vaccinations and some not. The CDC has said that deliberately unvaccinated people are the reason for this outbreaks and for most outbreaks. Vaccines can be very good because with vaccinations, the disease of smallpox has been eradicated because of them. Vaccines help protect families and communities from dangerous diseases. This event is very important because it shows that if we don't get vaccines, outbreaks will happen and people may die.

My event is about the announcement made by President Barack earlier today that the U.S. military troops who were sent to West Africa will be coming home by April. These troops were sent over there to help contain the spread of the disease ‘’Ebola’’. All but one hundred out of the three thousand of the military service members will return home by spring time; the one hundred American troops are staying to continue to fight the deadly disease in Africa until further notice. President Obama also announced that he will have a ceremony to meet six out of the eight Americans survivors that suffered from the disease. This ceremony will also raise questions to many people about whether or not that President Obama is prematurely claiming success or failure of labeling The National Security Priority, opening to himself and us to criticism that Ebola never again should spread all over the world.

ReplyDelete* Where and when did the event occur?
This event is going to occur at portland oregon this saturday on valentines day.
* Who was involved?
The people who are involved are the people who are attending the cuddle con on valentines day
* What happened? Summarize the events.
This is the world’s first ever cuddle con that will be happening in oregon. Its is going to be hosted by a company called cuddle me up where many strangers may come to cuddle with each other. ( strictly platonic)
* Why did it happen?
The founder of cuddle me up company kimberly Jensen (a company that provides affectionate but not sexually cuddle sessions) said that she hopes 2015 will be the year of the cuddle and people will start to see the positive effect of platonic touch. Jensen also thinks cuddle con is not only a positive thing for single people but people in a relationship. Jensen says there is usually one person in a relationship more affectionate than the other so maybe if they went to cuddle con together and so all the other people be affectionate it might help them become more affectionate too.
* How did it affect people?
A postdoctoral from university of toronto said that the effects of platonic touch in a professional encounter may seem appealing to some people because there is less intimidating than a romantic setting, because there is less chance of rejection. So with this said I personally feel like cuddle will be quite a success for people who are very nervous, shy ,and afraid of being rejected.
* What can we learn about life from the event? and/or How does the event show insight into the human condition.
When I first read this I was a little doubtful, but then i got to thinking that rejected and lonely people need love too. So then I thought it would be a perfect idea for some people. Alot of people in the world grow up cold, bitter, lonely, and without love. So to stop this cuddle con can help give them the affection they need. So with this it may help make the world a better place more loving place for people.
* Why is it important to be aware of national/global events?
It is important to be aware of national events because we are all connected as a nation and someone actions effects all of us. (for example) when that kid michael brown got shot there was a riot in louisiana or where ever he lived, it caused all the people in that area to riot, march, and speak out. There were many people who posted inspirationally things on social media sites and spoke about what happen to him. All this affected not just the people in this area but many people in the U.S. all because of what happened. This is why i think were all connected as a nation, because if something happens somewhere far away may not affect me directly but it affects me in someway.
http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/thomson-reuters/150209/district-columbia-holds-hearing-marijuana-sales
ReplyDelete(Reporting by Ian Simpson)
¨The legal sale of marijuana in the U.S. capital takes a step forward on Monday as District of Columbia city council members weigh a bill legalizing pot and regulating its sale. The hearing comes Congress face a end-of-the-month deadline to quash a ballot initiative overwhelmingly approved by Washington voters legalizing marijuana. 65% of Washington’s voters chose to legalize marijuana. The Marijuana Legalization and Regulation Act of 2015 will permit possession and distributional sells of small amounts of marijuana from adults. Also, it will allow cultivation of a maximum of 6 plants. President Barrack Obama also has taken a stance on Washington pot. His fiscal 2016 budget allows the district of Columbia to spend their funds on the legalization. The city has one of the lowest U.S. penalties for Possession of marijuana and/or paraphernalia.¨
I think that legalizing marijuana in Washington would change the arrest rate and the illegal possession rate. In my opinion if they legalized weed all over the U.S. it’d lower the arrest rate by a lot because most charges nowadays are mainly either possession of marijuana or possession of paraphernalia.
A fatal crashed happened this past Saturday between many cars. One of which is former Olympic decathlon gold medalist athlete and reality tv show member of the ¨Karadashians¨ Bruce Jenner’s. Although he was not hurt, one woman was. She was killed in the very fatal crash with the star. Bruce calls the crash ¨A devastating tragedy¨. The person that died in the accident was a woman by the name of Kim Howe. She was 69 when she was in the crash and was from Calabasa, California. The crash happened on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu. Bruce was driving a Cadillac Escalade and the woman was driving a Lexus. Police say the crash was caused by a Toyota Prius that either stopped and slowed down and was hit behind by the Lexus. Which then caused the chain reaction of crashes. This affected the family of Kim Howe for sure and definitely affects Bruce.

ReplyDeleteOn Tuesday in Chapel Hill, 3 students were killed by a man. The cause of the shooting was said to be because of an on-going parking dispute they had. All three of the victims, Deah Barakat 23, Yusor Abu-Salha 21, and Razan Abu-Salha 19, were Muslim. The suspect, Craig Stephen Hicks 46, has been charged with murder; his wife is planning on filing a divorce. The victims who were a newlywed couple and the brides sister were shot in the head. The victims families said that the suspect has threatened them before and that the shootings were a hate crimes. It is said that police are investigating the suspects computer to look for any signs of hate for Muslims, but they have found nothing that can say the crime was a hate crime. The suspect found a car that was apparently in “his parking spot” and went into the victims condo and shot all 3 of them in he head, afterwards Hicks turned himself in and is held without a bond. The whole Unc family is torn apart at the death of their classmates.
Dean Smith, the coaching innovator who won two national championships at North Carolina, an Olympic gold medal in 1976 and induction into basketball's Hall of Fame more than a decade before he left the bench, has died. He was 83. The retired coach died "peacefully" at his North Carolina home Saturday night, the school said in a statement Sunday from Smith's family. He was with his wife and five children. Smith had health issues in recent years, with the family saying in 2010 that he had a condition that was causing him to lose memory. He had kept a lower profile during that time. His wife, Linnea, accepted the Presidential Medal of Freedom on his behalf from President Barack Obama in November 2013. Roy Williams, the current North Carolina coach who spent 10 years as Smith's assistant, said Smith "was the greatest there ever was on the court but far, far better off the court with people." "I'd like to say on behalf of all our players and coaches, past and present, that Dean Smith was the perfect picture of what a college basketball coach should have been," Williams said in a statement. "We love him, and we will miss him."
ReplyDeleteA little league team from Chicago was stripped of their 2014 title just a few days ago. Their title was taken away from them, because it was said that they had ineligible players on the team. Also the international youth baseball organization suspend the team manager, for this action. The team will no longer be allowed to play in any tournament play. The reason the players were in ineligible was because the players lived outside the district of the team. This situation affected the kids, because they worked very hard to get that title. Now they have taken it away from them , in the worst way. It shows that you should not do illegal things or break the rules. Most likely you are going to be eventually caught. It is also important to know events around the world, just to be in the know of what is going. Especially in your country or around the world.
ReplyDeleteOn Tuesday, February 12, three UNC Chapel Hill students were shot and killed in a North Carolina parking space.Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23; Yusor Mohammad, 21; and Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19 were killed by Craig Stephen Hicks over a parking space dispute. Hicks is said to be a very angered man, and the three students just crossed him on the wrong night. They argued over a parking space, resulting in Hicks shooting the students. The family of the students believes it was a matter of racism, but Hicks wife reassures it was an anger issue and had nothing to do with race. The family of the students is very angered and is speaking to the public about their beliefs of the dreadful act. They mourn their family and the public is paying its respect. Hicks wife is filing a divorce from him as well. We as humans can learn from this event to not let your anger get the best of you,or to not make any undecided actions while you are angry. You may regret your choices. It is important to be aware of global events so you know what is going on and what the world is coming to. What can we learn about life from the event? and/or How does the event show insight into the human condition? You can learn to not live in the upper states and show how to live when you have over 80 inches of snow.
Why is it important to be aware of national/global events? To see what kind of weather and storms are coming and prepare for them.

ReplyDeleteIn January of 2012, the Costa Concordia sailed a little too close to the city of Giglio in Italy. The captain, Francesco Schettino, sailed the boat into the nearby rocks while trying to give the customers a good view of the coast. His reasoning? He wanted to “impress” the attendants on the boat. The ship crashed into the rocks and drifted towards the shore. There were thirty-two casualties. During the disaster, the captain “fell” into a lifeboat, or so he says. Evidence and audio tapes suggest he intentionally ditched the ship and tried to save his own life instead of his fellow crew members and the ships attendants. After a nineteen month trial he was finally found guilty of manslaughter and several other felonies. He was deemed a coward by the media and claims that he is also a victim of this terrible disaster just like the families of the people that died.
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2015/02/12/colombia-main-rebel-group-vows-to-stop-recruiting-youths-under-age-17/
ReplyDeleteAccording to a Fox News world article, In Havana, Cuba, the Colombian rebels said they would not recruit minors (below seventeen) into their ranks, anymore. Until recently the rebels have admittedly recruited people as young as fifteen years old. A problem with the age requirement, is that they are not letting people out once they have joined. They aren’t even letting people under the age of fifteen resign or quit. This article was written on february 12, 2015. The talks with the Rebels and the Colombian Government have been going on for over two years with only three out of the six points agreed upon. The action to begin these discussions were because of civil rights activists saying that their recruits were still children and that they should not be involved at such a young age. This shows that even though they are seen as villains they can change their policies. It is important to be informed about global events to know what other countries are doing that might change domestic policies.

The event i chose was Brian Williams cancellations of his appearance on one of the most highly watched talk shows on national television the David lettermen show. It was announced on February eight due to Williams latest controversy. Williams lied about his role in the war against iraq he claimed to be in a helicopter that was under fire during combat. It was a lie and now he's facing the consequences. It was revealed to be a lie when a soldier told media that he wasn't present in the helicopter at the time. Williams said he was gonna take a break from television for a couple days most likely because of his lies and controversy about the whole situation. Media says that he lied to get respect and popularity among American citizens. I think it's a terrible thing that he would lie and say he was at war when other people are at war right now risking there lifes. Also that its a disgrace to the soldiers that were actually in the helicopter at the time while it was under attack. It's safe to say that Williams is disgraced by people that he did that and claimed to be an American soldier. He will have to live with this for the rest of his entire life. Even though he apologized he knows that it can never be forgotten
ReplyDeleteMy article I read was “8 Million Tons Of Plastic Clutter Our Seas” by Christopher Joyce. It discussed how much trash is going into our oceans making them polluted. This harms the marine life because of entanglement or ingestion of the plastic. The plastic absorbs the harmful chemicals dumped in the ocean, and marine life from fish to whales eat the plastic bottles causing death. An engineer Jenna Jambeck has been studying how much plastic is reaching our oceans. She states that all this waste comes from landfills close to the coastline that either blows or washes into rivers that lead to the ocean. More recycling would help this problem. It seems that our larger countries, like China and Indonesia, are so fastly growing that they can’t keep up with recycling necessary to reduce waste. The trash of course grows as population increases. The article’s main focus was on the asian countries due to their larger coastline. As our oceans become more polluted, our water source purity is diminishing affecting us all. If no one ever brings this to our attention, we would never know it is a real problem. All of us can become more aware of our trash, and do our part to recycle. For instance, maybe changing our plastics to something more biodegradable.
ReplyDeleteMy article is about the incident in Chapel Hill. The event occured in Chapel Hill. Three young college students were killed, they lived in Chapel Hill North Carolina. The event occured Tuesday after 5 pm. The innocent victums killed were Shaddy Barakat 23, his wife Yusur 21, and her sister Razan. The one behind the horrible acts is Craig Stephen Hicks. The three of them were shot at a complex. A neighbor called the police and said she heard screams and the shots. This all happened after 5pm. It affected the people of Chapel Hill North Carolina because it does not seem like a safe place to live in anymore. It

that humans are very unpredicatable and cruel. We can learn that we should be wary and guarded on people who seem constantly angry. We can also learn that even in a free country like ours people can still be discriminated against because of their religion or ethnicity. My news story event is about the U.S. hostage kayla mueller. A very intelligent and smart woman who was aiding refugees in Syria, she graduated from Arizona State University and always wanted to help people. On august 4th, 2013, kayla was kidnapped by the terrorist organization known as ISIS(Islamic state of Iran and Syria). Kayla was held under ISIS custody for almost 2 years until recently kayla’s parents received a private messages from the terrorist organization themselves saying that their daughter kayla was killed. According to ISIS, the cause of her death was a U.S. drone attack on the building that kayla was staying in. But there is no hard evidence if this is merely an excuse from ISIS or the truth. All we know is that due to the problems humans have with one another we have lost a great young individual who wanted to do nothing more than help out others. It is important that we know what is happening around the world because there are many stories just like this one that people don’t even notice it. It seems like only when something appears on the news it becomes important. And i think that should change.
ReplyDeleteAn 11 year old girl in Ohio is being charged with murder of a 2 month old baby. this took place at an apartment in the city of Wickliffe where the baby was being babysitted by the alleged mother of the 11 year old. the there is no specific date as to when this occurred but i assume it was last friday because it says Friday and the story was last updated today. The investigators don’t know what could have been the girls motives to kill the baby . Her mother (babysitter) had fell asleep and took the baby zuri upstairs. 45 minutes later the 11 year old awoke her mother and told her something was wrong with the baby.the baby was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery but unfortunately did not survive such trauma . She suffered severe trauma to her kidney , spleen and brain . The 11 year old seems to be conscious of what she has done because when she was asked about charges being brought against her , she answered “yes” . She was asked to take a mental competency exam to check for any possible disorders that could have triggered such disturbing behavior from such a young girl and is now being detained at the lake county Juvenile detention center. this affects our community b/c it makes one see that not only adults commit such crimes but kids do also . it helps keep one more alert ,especially with a lot of kids around and everyone should be aware of things like these to keep everyone safer.

On February 14th there was an attack aimed at a Swedish cartoonist. The name of the cafe was The Krudttoenden Cafe in Copenhagen Denmark. There were said to be as many as 40 shots on Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks who was attending a free speech meeting. Vilks was dragged into the kitchen by bodyguards that were with him in the cafe. Danish police said that they spotted two perpetrators in a dark colored Volkswagen speeding off afterwards. The incident was considered an attempted assassination on the Swedish Cartoonist. Denmark’s Prime minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt called the shooting an act of terrorism. She proposed that the attempt had all the signs of a political assassination. Denmark’s security service said that the attempt was a terror attack but there were no immediate claims of responsibility. Danish police do not know if they should classify the attack as a terrorist attack but are investigating it as one. Vilks has been threatened many times for his 2007 caricatures of the prophet Mohammed. It is important to be informed of national event because it is good to know what is happening around the world and out of the United States in order to be informed of the status of the world around us.

I would venture to say that the attacks against the cartoonist are among the most important events in the last several weeks because it has stirred the debate on the degree to which free speech should be protected. Great summary.
DeleteAs of this week, the United State's Air Force's European Command has deployed twelve Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II combat aircraft to Spangdahlem Air Base Germany as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. Operation Atlantic Resolve was initiated in response to the Russian Federation's intervention in Ukraine over the past year. Lt. General Tom Jones, vice commander, United States Air Forces in Europe -- Air Forces Africa, stated that "The Air Force is increasing rotational presence in Europe to reassure our allies and partner nations that our commitment to European security is a priority." The deployment of these assault aircraft has caused some concern among the people of Europe, primarily due to the possible tension escalation that may ensue in response to deployment. This event has come to show that the people of the world are supporting each other to stand against what they feel is wrong, which has happened throughout history and will continue to recur in the future. It is important to monitor global news events, as it allows you to understand the world in its current state, as well as prepare for changes in the world that may affect you in one of a variety of levels. http://www.cnn.com/2015/02/12/world/a-10-jets-to-europe/index.html

ReplyDeleteIn Potiskum, Nigeria a man got onto a crowded bus and detonated explosives. This suicide killed 12 people and injured 20. The group responsible for this suicide bombing is still unknown. However, past events lead to the Nigerian group Boko Haram Islamic extremist group. There have been multiple bombings in Nigeria and all over the world. The bombing in Nigeria was a suicide bombing no one knows the real reason for why it happened; but then again why does anything so tragic happen? Sad to say that in our society today things like that do happen and it causes great devastation to a family, friends, and a community or a country. There is a lot going on in this world; and whether it's overseas, on the other side of the country, or across the street. We need to be aware of what is going on around us in the world. So many peoples excuse is that, " they didn't know." As a people we need to be constantly aware so that we do know what's going on and stay updated on current situations. By doing this we can create a safe society.

New guidelines from the World Health Organization say the world is eating too much sugar and people should slash their sugar intake to just 5 to 10 percent of their overall calories.
ReplyDeleteThe guidelines finalize draft advice first released last year, which were published Wednesday after a year of consultations. They are focused on the added sugars in processed food and those in honey, syrups and fruit juices. The advice does not apply to naturally occurring sugars in fruits, vegetables and milk, since those come with essential nutrients.
Experts have long railed about the dangers of sugar and studies suggest that people who eat large amounts of the sweet stuff are at higher risk of dying prematurely from heart problems, among other complications.
To meet the lower threshold set by the new guidelines, Americans, Europeans and others in the West would have to slash their average sugar intake by about two-thirds.
